Music In The School

The "Music in the School" program was begun nearly two decades ago as an outreach of the Washington Island Music Festival. Contributions have been earmarked for providing the Washington Island Community at large with a quality music education program in the local school.

Dan Hansen was the first "Music in the School" teacher.  He retired in the spring of 2011, and Donna Briesemeister took up the effort from there.  Both have been Wisconsin DPI fully certified music instructors, with years of experience in public schools.

Twice a week instruction is offered to all students, kindergarten through the 8th grade.  The program focuses on music appreciation and on rigorous study in music literacy; that is, reading and writing, as well as keyboard instruction. In 2023 a Youth Choir was  added with annual performances at the Veterans Day Program at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center.
